Abstract

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is obtained in large amounts through endogenous synthesis in the skin with the help of sunlight. Vitamin D has a classic role, namely to help regulate mineral and bone metabolism. On the other hand, a novel study shows the role of vitamin D on human immunity. This role is characterized by the presence of vitamin D receptor (VDR) and 1-?-hydroxylase (CYP27B1) enzyme on immune cells. Through these receptor and enzyme, vitamin D can modulate both innate and adaptive human immune system. The role of vitamin D in the innate immune system involves modulating the activity of monocytes or macrophages and dendritic cells, while the role of vitamin D in the adaptive immune system involves modulating the activity of B lymphocytes and T lymphocytes.
